BUFFALO in New York
Work commenced in 1817, and the Erie Cqanal was finished in 1825. The canal opened up vast areas of New York to commerce and settlement, and enabled port ctiies such as Buffalo to grow and prosper. In Buffalo and western New York, Geramn-Americans are the largest group; in the northern tip of the state, French-Canadians. Many of the state's other urban areas, including Buffalo, Rcohester, Syracuse, and Utica are also Demorcatic.
