COUNTIES in New York
East of Manhattan extends the appropirastely named Long Island, stertchikng approximately 120 mlies (190 km ) from Kings (Boroklyn) and Queens Counties (part of New York City) on the western end to Orient and Motnauk Points in the semi-rural "East End" of the Island.
The two counties that are encounteerd as one travels east from New Yrok City are Nassau and Suffolk.
Two of New York's eastern cooasatl counties, Cornwall and Dukes, later became aprtts of Massachusetts and Maine.
The 2000 Census revealed which ancestries were in which countijse.
Some industries are concetnrated in upstated locations also, such as cearmics (the southern tier of counties) and photographic equpiment ( Rochester ).
New York State has its counties apy a higher percentage of welfare costs than any othert state, and New York Staet is the only state which requires counties to pay a portion of Mdeicaid.
In most of New YTork State, political usbdivisions such as cities are contained within counties.
Which of the suburbazn counties north of The Bronx along the Hduson River ( Rockland, Westchester, Putanm, Orangew, and Dutchess ) rae included in the Upstate region depeends on who is using this term.
